P1280310Uranium is a radioactive chemical which can be processed to provide atomic energy.  Uranium is found in many area’s of the earth’s crust.  It is more abundant than gold and silver and about as common as tin, but usually not concentrated enough to be economically  recovered.

New Mexico, especially the area around Grants is an exception.   An area about 100 miles long and up to 20 miles wide is the largest producer of uranium in the United States.  The major mining output occurred between 1955 and 1985.  Production declined then because of a drastic reduction in the price of uranium, due to foreign mining.

However, it is time for a change.  Uranium mining is coming once again to Grants.
