Who We Are

We sold our home in June, 2007, and spent the next 7 1/2 years traveling full time in a Cross Roads Fifth Wheel. (We had been traveling during our summers for several years before going full time.) We loved the full-time lifestyle! Each summer we spent a month or two volunteering in State Parks, first in Indiana at McCormick's Creek State Park, near our family, then in later years as the grandchildren got older, at the Bluewater Lake State Park in New Mexico. We spent 6 months each winter at Cactus Gardens RV Resort in Yuma, AZ, where I worked mornings in the park office. The remaining months were spent on the road, seeing this great country of ours. Our favorite places are our National Parks. Anita loved photography and the freedom of digital photography, taking sometimes hundreds of photos in a day. We hiked as much as our legs will allow. We also really enjoyed square and round dancing as we travel across country, and meeting all the wonderful people who dance and/or travel.

But as in all things, there comes a time for change, and we decided it was time to create roots once more. In the fall of 2014, we purchased a home in Cactus Gardens, and in the spring of 2015, sold the 5th wheel. Anita also retired in the spring. We will continue to travel each summer, but for a shorter period of time. We hope to continue blogging about those trips, but it will obviously be on a more limited basis than in the past.

Please explore our past posts if you are interested in traveling this great country. You'll find an index in the left column. We hope you enjoy our blog, and appreciate all comments

A Visit Along the Way

Usually our trip west includes a stop in Deming, NM.   The main reason for staying over a few nights is to visit with square dance friends.  We took our first five lessons with the Good Times Squares several years ago.  While some of those dancers are now gone, it’s always fun to stop and dance with old friends and new to the calling of Rusty Wright.

Texas

Our immediate destination was Texas, where we planned to spend a month with good friends, Donna and Glenn Hallford, after an extended weekend stay with granddaughter, Cassandra.

We stayed at Cedar Breaks C.O.E. on Lake Georgetown.  The campground is appropriately named as you park nestled among the cedars.2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (9)

It was quite hot, so we stayed inside for most of Cassie’s visit.  A short walk through the campground took us to a homestead site from the past.2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (6)        2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (7) All that remains of the home are some foundation stones.2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (8)     2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (10)

The drought has been severe in Texas, vividly pointed out by these beached piers. There is no water running where once there was fishing from the docks.2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (3)    2011-08-20 - TX - Cedar Breaks C.O.E. - Visit with Cassie (4)

The dry grass appeared golden in the light of the setting sun.

As we walked along the edge of the lake, the  evening colors were spectacular.

Our visit was to end on a sad note.  We received word that Glenn had passed away unexpectedly.  We continued on to Kerrville to spend the month with Donna.

Glenn was a very special friend.  We have traveled with him and Donna often over the years.  We shall always miss him.  This photo was taken last spring when he and Donna joined Cassie and us at Georgetown Lake for a week.
